Actor Eric Dane, famously known for his roles on "Grey's Anatomy" and "Euphoria," has bravely bared his battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a.k.a Lou Gehrig's Disease, in his first TV interview since the diagnosis. At 52, Dane candidly recounted the symptoms that led him to his current state.
"I felt a tad weaker in my right hand," Dane admitted to "Good Morning America." Initially, he chalked it up to excessive texting or mere fatigue. However, as the weakness persisted, he sought medical advice, only to be passed around to various specialists who, in his words, weren't able to pinpoint the root cause. That is, until he was sent to a neurologist who finally diagnosed him with ALS.
ALS, as explained by the ALS Association, is a debilitating disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, controlling both upper and lower body muscles. Unfortunately, there's no known cure.
"Those three little letters haunt me every morning," Dane told ABC, referring to the diagnosis. His right arm and hand have ceased to function, and he fears his left hand will follow suit within the next few months. He also voiced concern over the loss of leg mobility, a fear he described as "daunting."
Dane, who was a heartthrob as Dr. Mark "McSteamy" Sloan on "Grey's Anatomy," boasts a lengthy acting resume that includes films like "Bad Boys: Ride or Die." Recently, he's graced our screens as Cal Jacobs, Jacob Elordi's father in "Euphoria."
In Denver, Dane was spotted at the Global Down Syndrome Foundation's 2022 Be Beautiful Be Yourself Fashion Show. His personal life is also in the spotlight, as he shares two teen daughters with actress Rebecca Gayheart. They've been married since 2004, though they've had their ups and downs.
Dane spoke highly of Gayheart, stating they've developed a strong bond and remain each other's biggest supporters. He revealed they talk daily and have managed to strengthen their friendship and parenting skills.
Despite the hardships, Dane remains positive. He's focusing on his family and working as much as he can, sharing, "I'm only seeking to spend time with my family and do a bit of work if possible." In conclusion, Dane expresses hope, stating, "I'm convinced this isn't the end of my journey."
