This approach is part of a broader nutrition strategy by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, which aims to create a food system enabling healthy, sustainable eating for all by 2050, as outlined in the Good Food for Germany strategy. The German Nutrition Society (DGE) supports such guidelines, advocating colorful, plant-based diets that are both healthy and sustainable.
Unlike the previous regulation introduced by Cem Özdemir, which only allowed vegetarian food made from 100 percent organic products at official ministry events, Minister Rainer's new regulation allows for more variety in the food served. It also breaks with this regulation, allowing exceptions for certain occasions such as the open day or receptions during the Green Week.
Minister Rainer has made it clear that he understands the approach of those who choose to eat vegetarian or vegan, and does not judge the eating habits of others. He does not intend to start a "culture war" on the plates or in the refrigerators at official ministry events. Instead, he aims to promote a healthier and more sustainable approach to food at these events.
Minister Rainer's announcement regarding the new regulation was made in the "Bild" newspaper. He has also expressed tolerance towards different dietary habits, including vegetarian and vegan diets. Despite being a trained butcher, he does not judge the food choices of others, as long as the food is fresh and tastes good.
