Cyclists Gather for Hanse Tour, Raising Funds for Ailing Children - Bicyclists Raise Funds for Severely Ill Children During Hanseatic Expedition
The 29th edition of the Hanse-Tour Sonnenschein, a four-day charity bike ride, is set to commence on Monday. Organized by Claus Ruhe Madsen, the longtime mayor of Rostock and the current Minister of Economics of Schleswig-Holstein, the event aims to raise funds for sick children, their families, and research into childhood diseases.
The route of the event starts in Rostock, passes through Eutin, Ostholstein, and Kiel, and ends again in Rostock, covering approximately 600 kilometers. Over the years, the Hanse-Tour has become a well-loved tradition in Schleswig-Holstein, with up to 200 cyclists participating each year.
Before the start of the tour, the organizer expresses hope for everyone's safety. Despite the occasional incident every year, Claus Ruhe Madsen remains optimistic, stating, "We hope that everyone gets through the tour healthy."
The funds raised during the Hanse-Tour are distributed to children's hospitals, pediatric wards, and projects that aid seriously ill children. Over its 29 years of existence, the Hanse-Tour has collected more than 7.7 million euros, with around 100,000 euros being collected annually in recent years.
A portion of the donations regularly flows to the initiative "Mike Möwenherz" of the University Medical Center Rostock, which provides care for children at home, allowing them to avoid hospitalization during their final days. The University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein is also expected to benefit from the donations collected during the Hanse-Tour.
Donations are collected along the route by participants asking for contributions from oncoming vehicles. Children and mayors of the communities often welcome the cyclists and participate in small programs during the stops. Donations are often handed over during these stops.
