Rhineland-Palatinate Sees Surge in Respiratory Illnesses, According to DAK Health Insurance

The health insurance company DAK reported a 20% increase in sick days due to respiratory problems among its insured members in Rhineland-Palatinate during the first quarter of 2025. The increase is attributed to a significant wave of colds and respiratory infections that marked the start of the year.

According to the data analyzed by the IGES Institute in Berlin, the increased rate of respiratory illnesses led to approximately 20% more sick days compared to the same period in 2024. The data was drawn from about 132,000 employed DAK policyholders in the region.

The rise in respiratory illnesses partially offset by a decrease in most other illness categories, resulting in an overall sickness rate of 6.4% - only 0.1 percentage points above the previous year's value.

The surge in respiratory disease activity appears to be due primarily to the usual, but elevated, seasonal pattern of colds, flu, and other respiratory conditions common in winter and early spring. No unique, non-seasonal causes such as new pathogens or increased pollution were highlighted in the available reports.
