Improving Pain Recognition in Children with Transfer Learning
Recent advancements in machine learning have led to the development of innovative approaches for recognising pain in children. One such method is the application of transfer learning, which can significantly enhance the performance of machine learning models.
Transfer learning involves leveraging pre-trained models or synthetic datasets to augment training data and improve generalization across diverse ages and demographics. In the context of pain recognition in children, this technique can be particularly beneficial.
Computer vision algorithms, developed to automatically detect Facial Action Units (AUs) defined by the Facial Action Coding System (FACS), play a crucial role in this process. Previous work has utilised these automatically detected AUs to develop pain/no-pain classifiers. However, to improve classification performance, a transfer learning method was applied to map automated AU codings to a subspace of manual AU codings.
In the past, the application of pain/no-pain classifiers based on automated AU codings across different environmental domains resulted in diminished performance. However, the transfer learning method used in the current work has enabled more robust pain recognition performance, even when only automatically coded AUs are available for the test data.
This method was applied to data from the target data domain, and the Area under the ROC Curve (AUC) on independent data was improved from 0.69 to 0.72. This improvement demonstrates the potential of transfer learning in enhancing the accuracy of pain recognition in children.
It is well established that facial activity provides sensitive and specific information about pain in children. By improving the performance of pain recognition models, transfer learning can help ensure that children's pain is accurately identified and appropriately managed.
In summary, applying transfer learning to pediatric pain recognition involves fine-tuning pre-trained models with augmented and age-appropriate synthetic facial AU data to increase diversity, reduce bias, and improve classifier accuracy. This is particularly effective when the synthetic dataset includes clinically relevant pain expressions mapped to Facial Action Units consistent with established pain frameworks. The potential benefits of this approach are significant, and further research in this area is warranted.
