Controversial Hubertus Mass Set for Lucerne Jesuit Church

A controversial event is set to take place at the Jesuit Church in Lucerne. A Hubertus mass, accompanied by the 'Natural Horn Blowers Auerhahn Luzern', will occur on November 9th at 3:00 PM. The event has sparked criticism from animal welfare groups and some religious communities.

Hubertus masses are held annually to honour St. Hubert, the patron saint of hunters. According to legend, St. Hubert was a passionate hunter who gave up hunting after a stag revealed a cross to him. Ironically, these masses are often attended and organized by hobby hunters, despite being incompatible with Christian ethics of respect for life.

The event in Lucerne has been condemned by the IG Wild beim Wild, who argue that hunting does not effectively regulate wild animal populations. Instead, it increases births and causes unnecessary suffering. Up to two-thirds of wild animals may not die immediately during driven hunts, enduring for days before dying. The group also criticizes the glorification of violence in these events, which often mark the start of driven and special hunts.

The IG Wild beim Wild has appealed to church representatives to distance themselves from these controversial masses. They argue that churches should stand for the preservation of creation, not its destruction. The upcoming event in Lucerne serves as a reminder of the ongoing debate surrounding hunting and its compatibility with Christian ethics.
