In Herford County, Germany, a significant number of care-dependent individuals are being cared for at home, with over 80% relying on the dedication of family members and caregivers. However, many of these caregivers are finding it increasingly difficult to obtain professional support.

Recognising the challenges faced by these unsung heroes, Britta Holtmann from the care planning department of Herford County initiated a poster action, drawing attention to the efforts of caregivers. This action coincides with the nationwide Day of Caregivers, aiming to put these individuals who care for their care-dependent relatives with heart, time, and energy in the spotlight.

County Commissioner Jürgen Müller emphasised that care is primarily the responsibility of families, and the dedication of caregivers is invaluable but receives little recognition. He stated that numerous citizens in the Herford district take on the challenging task of caring for a relative at home - often in addition to work, family, and their own challenges.

To support its own employees, the county administration offers so-called care guides, and they are members of the state program "Compatibility of Work and Care" since this year. This program provides several workshops and further training sessions throughout the year, aimed at balancing work and care responsibilities.

In addition, an online exchange organized by the equal opportunities department takes place once a quarter, where caregivers can exchange experiences and provide mutual support. The county administration also offers an online platform for this purpose.

For those seeking advice, the mobile care counseling services of Herford County can be reached at 05221 13-18486 and 05221 13-18485. The care support points of the health insurance companies AWO, IKK, and BKK HMR also provide advice.

Britta Holtmann, who initiated the poster action, is aware of the challenges faced by caregivers and is happy to answer questions. She can be reached by phone at 05221 13-1405 or by email at b.holtmann@our website.

From September 8, 2025, a three-meter-long banner will be displayed in front of the Herford County Administration Building for a week, highlighting the efforts of caregivers. The person who initiated the installation of the banner remains unnamed.

The city of Herford can be contacted at 05221 189 464 for further information or support. This initiative by the county aims to show appreciation for the hard work and dedication of caregivers, who often face bureaucratic, social, physical, and psychological challenges in their role.
