Rising COVID-19 Cases in India: Kerala Leads with Over 1,000 Active Cases
India has witnessed a surge in active COVID-19 cases, reaching a total of 3,395 as of June 1, 2025. In a concerning development, Kerala has become the first state to report over 1,000 active cases, followed closely by Maharashtra, Delhi, Gujarat, and other key states.
Delhi, in particular, has experienced nearly triple the number of cases, reaching 375, and reporting its first death on May 30, 2025. The case involved a 60-year-old woman with an underlying intestinal condition, who was undergoing sensitive treatment, making her susceptible to the Omicron variant.
Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have also crossed the 100-case mark, but Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Delhi have been the hardest hit after Kerala, with 467, 265, and 375 active cases respectively. West Bengal reported 205 new cases.
Health officials and political leaders have been reassuring citizens that symptoms have been mild and manageable. The emergence of the Omicron variant, JN.1, while concerning, has not resulted in severe illness in most cases.
In response to the surge, states are ensuring hospitals are fully equipped, and vaccines, RT-PCR tests, isolation facilities, and oxygen cylinders are being stocked up. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah have both assured their states are well-prepared for any potential surge.
Doctors advise that persistence of symptoms beyond four days is cause for concern for patients. Symptoms to watch out for include nasal congestion, gastrointestinal issues, nausea, prolonged fatigue, headaches, throat pain, and flu-like symptoms.
Sikkim remains the only state with no active COVID-19 cases, while Uttarakhand has shown a positive trend in recovery.
