In December 2022, former English cricketer Andrew Flintoff was involved in a serious accident on the Top Gear track in Surrey. He was airlifted to St George's Hospital in Tooting, where the staff's "love and compassion" and "incredible" efforts played a crucial role in his recovery.

Upon his arrival, the emergency department quickly identified the severity of Flintoff's condition and escalated it to senior specialists, including maxillofacial surgeon Jahrad Haq. Haq, who knew immediately that Flintoff's case was something out of the ordinary, later described Flintoff's injuries as some of the most complex he had seen in over 20 years of trauma cases.

The maxillofacial surgical team likely managed Flintoff's complex facial and jaw injuries, while dental and orthodontic nurses, such as lead dental nurse Linda Holden and principal orthodontic nurse Sonia Steer, supported his recovery involving dental alignment and oral care. Orthopaedic trauma surgeons also contributed to managing broken bones and other musculoskeletal injuries.

Flintoff's account of being dragged under a three-wheel car for about 50m on the runway illustrates the severity of the incident that required rapid, multidisciplinary intervention from skilled hospital staff.

During his visit to St George's hospital to thank the staff, Flintoff spent a significant amount of time chatting with them, expressing his gratitude for their "absolute superhero" efforts. His visit meant a lot to the staff, according to trauma and orthopaedic surgeon Shamim Umarji, who also treated Flintoff.

The incident on the Top Gear track led to the BBC pulling the plug on Top Gear, but it remains unclear if it will ever return. Despite the challenging circumstances, the staff at St George's Hospital demonstrated their commitment to providing exceptional care to their patients.
