Denmark's Widespread Winter Ailments During the Holiday Season
Denmark's Health Situation: What's Up, Doc?* Chuckle
Christmas is nearly here, and Denmark's infectious disease experts aren't exactly decking the halls just yet. While COVID-19 cases are on the decline, other seasonal sicknesses are on the rise, according to the State Serum Institute (SSI).

The overall count of respiratory infections is climbing before the big day, as SSI's latest data shows. Despite a promising decrease in COVID-19 rates, it's still hanging around, albeit at "medium" levels - a significant drop compared to this time last year.
Sewage water testing reveals a plummeting trend in the virus' presence, suggesting it's taking a Santa-sized chill pill.
"It's great to see a lighter load of COVID-19 around Christmastime, which is a boon for our healthcare system as it braces for other infections' surge," explained Bolette Søborg, SSI's department head and consultant physician, in their statement.
COVID-19: A Brief Breather
SSI reported last week that both the RS virus and influenza were making their way onto Denmark's epidemiological naughty list. True to form, hospital admissions for both viruses have increased this week, with hospitalizations for both sicknesses still below average levels.
Influenza: An Unwelcome Guest
Influenza cases have jumped by more than 40% in the past week, spreading Christmas cheer to some unfortunate souls. Despite this, the flu remains at a moderate level compared to peak seasons pre-pandemic.
RSV: A menace to the Young and Elderly
RSV, a virus that primarily affects children under age 2 and the elderly, has also doubled in cases this week. Much like its pesky sibling, the RSV is currently at a moderate level, and hospitalizations are still relatively low.
Mycoplasma: The Stealthy Invader
Mycoplasma, a type of bacteria causing respiratory infections, is on the decline but still lingers at a high level. With more than 1,400 cases reported this week, it's a stubborn foe that refuses to disappear entirely.
