Dental status assessment becomes a prerequisite for school admission

In an exciting development, the City of Göttingen and the University Medical Center Göttingen are joining forces to conduct a comprehensive study on the dental and overall health of school-aged children. This study, which will take place from December 4, 2024, to June 2025, forms part of the school entry health check.

The dental examination, offered voluntarily and free of charge, will be held at Theaterplatz 4 in Göttingen. The Polyclinic for Preventive Dentistry, Caries Research, and Periodontology at the University Medical Center Göttingen will also provide study information.

Beyond the legally required examination, the children's current dental status will be assessed. The aim of this study is to help identify potential health risk factors for dental damage and enable tailored preventive measures to improve children's oral health.

The investigation into the connection between dental health and overall health includes an examination of irregularities during pregnancy and birth, chronic illnesses, medication use, and developmental delays.

It's important to note that the dental service of the health department of the Regionalverband Saarbrücken is conducting a similar investigation into all preschool children. They perform dental examinations at primary and special schools as part of group prophylaxis.

Feedback on the child's oral health will be provided after the examination. Detailed information about the study can be found on the City of Göttingen's website. A joint press release regarding the study has been issued by the City of Göttingen and the University Medical Center Göttingen.

This study is a significant step towards understanding the intricate relationship between dental and overall health in children. By participating, parents can contribute to improving the oral health of their children and potentially uncovering valuable insights about overall health and development.
