Incident Records: 644 instances of alleged anti-Muslim hatred documented - Detailed Report: 644 instances of anti-Muslim hostile acts logged

Gathering the Unseen: A staggering 644 instances of discrimination, verbal attacks, and physical assaults perpetrated against Muslim individuals were documented last year in Berlin by the Report Berlin center. The Berlin Reporting and Information Center of the Claim network unveiled these alarming figures in its 2024 annual report, with a significant majority of victims being women.

A Sharp Uptick, a Disturbing Trend: The number of anti-Muslim and racist incidents registered in 2023 was significantly lower at 382. However, since October 2023, following the terror attack by the Islamic Hamas on Israel, there's been a concerning increase in such incidents in Berlin. Rima Hanano, of the Report Berlin center, highlighted this trend stating, "Berlin has a problem, and that problem is anti-Muslim racism."

Unreported Cases: The Silent Majority: It's assumed that numerous incidents go unreported by victims themselves. Hanano pointed out that many victims choose not to report out of fear or lack of trust in authorities. The incidents in the annual report were compiled from various sources, including six reporting centers, online reports from victims, and data from the police.

Women most Affected, Children Vulnerable: In the annual report, it was stated that women were the most frequent victims of such incidents, particularly if they wore a headscarf or other religious clothing. Chillingly, children were not exempt from these attacks.

Locations of Incidents: The education sector accounted for 35% of the total incidents, followed by public spaces, workplaces, and public transportation. Interestingly, incidents were also reported in government agencies, the police, and the healthcare sector.

Examples of Incidents: The annual report included numerous disturbing examples. A woman wearing a headscarf was verbally abused and called both a terrorist and an anti-Semite by another woman. A kindergarten teacher was asked by a colleague if all Muslims were terrorists. A woman's headscarf was forcibly removed by an attacker at a bus stop and another woman was attacked with a knife. A family was attacked with a beer bottle at a park, causing injuries to one of the children. A high school refused to hire a Muslim applicant as a substitute teacher due to concerns about parents' complaints regarding the headscarf.

Nationwide Figures: Claim will publish nationwide figures for similar incidents in 2024 in the coming weeks. Similar documentation and annual reports can be found for anti-Semitic, racist, and homophobic incidents from various initiatives and research centers.
