Diabetic complications lead to death of tourist at holy site of Mecca

In an unexpected turn of events, Hajiya Jamila Muhammad, a revered pilgrim hailing from Plateau State, has bid her final farewell on the sacred grounds of Mecca. The unfortunate incident occurred on Monday, June 2, during the ongoing 2025 Hajj.

The cause of her demise was revealed to be complications related to diabetes, as reported by medical professionals at King Abdul'aziz Hospital in Mecca.

The Executive Secretary of the Plateau State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Daiyabu Dauda, confirmed the news in a heartfelt statement. Touching on the somber occasion, the statement read,

The statement further shared that immediate medical attention was sought in accordance with the directives of Governor Caleb Mutfwang, but it wasn't enough to save her.

Funeral prayers were held at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, attended by the Amirul Hajj, other officials, and the deceased's relatives. In accordance with Islamic rites, she was laid to rest.

Dauda extended his condolences to the Plateau State Government, the family, and friends of the deceased, expressing their profound loss. He also prayed for the forgiveness of her sins and her admittance to the highest place in paradise.

While we mourn the loss of Hajiya Jamila Muhammad, let's take a moment to reflect on the trials faced by pilgrims during the Hajj. This year's expedition has come amidst predicted temperatures reaching up to 50 degrees Celsius[1][2]. Consequently, reports of heat-related illnesses and deaths, such as 44 cases of heat stroke, have emerged[1][2].

Moreover, the risk of infectious diseases like MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome) exists, with nine cases recently reported[2]. Nevertheless, Saudi Arabia has implemented safety measures such as cooling systems at the Grand Mosque to maintain temperatures between 22-24 degrees Celsius and a crackdown on unauthorized pilgrims to limit crowd density[1][3].

May Hajiya Jamila Muhammad rest in eternal peace.
