Digital Medical Record Services Temporarily Discontinued and Subsequently Reinstated by Lightwave for Health Institutions in Ghana
The Lightwave Health Information Management System (LHIMS), a crucial component of Ghana's healthcare infrastructure, experienced a temporary suspension of services on May 31st, 2025. This suspension had potential implications for the continuity of healthcare services across the country.
LHIMS, a system used across public hospitals and health facilities in Ghana, supports electronic medical records, patient data, and networked services. The suspension impacted WAN connectivity for the LHIMS, affecting access to the application and integrated services.
The reason for the suspension was delays in the government's contract extension consent process. During this period, there was no support, calls, service requests, or technical assistance available.
However, Lightwave eHealthcare Solutions Limited has since reactivated its services following discussions with the Ministry of Health. The reactivation was aimed at improving the performance and functionality of the system, ensuring better service delivery and enhanced health data management across healthcare facilities in the country.
The suspension also halted periodic system and software updates for the LHIMS. This could have potentially disrupted electronic medical records and patient data across Ghana's public hospitals and health facilities, forming a significant challenge for the country's health information backbone.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Health, Tony Goodman, stated that the company and the Ministry of Health had discussions for the company to reactivate its service. The discussions were held behind closed doors.
Despite the temporary disruption, the Lightwave Health Information Management System (LHIMS) remains a crucial component of Ghana's healthcare infrastructure, playing a vital role in managing health information, including electronic medical records and patient data, across the country's public hospitals and health facilities.
The temporary suspension of the Lightwave Health Information Management System (LHIMS) posed potential challenges for managing medical-conditions and general-news concerning health-and-wellness in Ghana, particularly due to the halted software updates and the impact on electronic medical records. The reactivation of the LHIMS, facilitated by discussions with the Ministry of Health, aims to address these concerns and ensure the system's continued role in supporting technology advancements within Ghana's healthcare sector.
