Driver on the highway: "They've struck me five, six times so far"
On the A93, a notorious stretch of road for road workers, an additional warning sign was added in 2017 to indicate construction sites or closed lanes. Yet, despite these efforts, accidents continue to occur, as evidenced by the recent incident involving road worker Josef Bösler.
Josef, a veteran road worker since 1992, recounted his harrowing experience in May 2017, when a truck hit a warning trailer, sending him flying and resulting in a concussion and a potential brain bleed. This is just one of several severe accidents he has experienced over his 25-year career.
His colleague, Robert Siegritz, shares similar stories. He has been a road worker since 1992 as well and has been involved in three accidents during his career. Robert expressed his confusion about the inattentiveness of some drivers, with temperatures seeming to worsen the issue. He recalled an incident where a colleague was injured, and a driver complained about the traffic redirection.
The state road 2123 between Großschönbrunn and the district road AS19 at Ehenfeld is currently under renovation but not yet completed. Despite this ongoing construction, drivers seem to be overlooking advance warnings, as Robert lamented.
The warning trailers with blinking arrows are equipped with CB radio and GPS to alert truck drivers and navigation devices of upcoming hazards. However, it seems that these measures are not always enough. In one instance, a truck driver claimed to have seen the warnings but couldn't switch to the left lane due to car traffic, resulting in a collision with a warning trailer.
Standing still on the shoulder of the A93 is the most dangerous for road workers, as trucks often drive over the line and pass by very close. This close call is a daily reality for road workers like Josef and Robert.
Harald Windschiegl, head of the highway maintenance crew, reported that two trailers have already been damaged this year, with one being only minor damage. Fortunately, no employee has been injured so far.
The inattentiveness of some drivers is a growing concern, with tragic consequences. Recently, a 74-year-old biker crashed into a field for unknown reasons, resulting in fatal injuries.
Despite these challenges, both Josef and Robert remain dedicated to their work, hoping for a safer future on the A93. However, until drivers pay closer attention to the road and the warnings, the dangers will persist.
