Due to the offensive chemical composition, Eco-Test issues a cautionary alert to consumers regarding this ice.
In a recent investigation by Oeko-Test, the popular vegan ice cream brand, Cremissimo Bourbon Vanille by Unilever, received a grade of "insufficient." The overall result for Cremissimo ice cream was based mainly on the ingredients, as it was the only variety given a low grade in the test.
Laboratory analysis revealed significantly increased levels of saturated mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOSH/MOSH-analogues) in Cremissimo ice cream. These substances can accumulate in human fat tissue and some organs, although the exact consequences are unclear.
In addition to the high levels of MOSH/MOSH-analogues, Cremissimo ice cream also contains carrageenan, a thickening agent. The report associates carrageenan with a risk of causing intestinal inflammation. However, the primary factor for Cremissimo's low ranking was the elevated mineral oil content rather than carrageenan.
Despite the sensory judgment for Cremissimo ice cream being positive, receiving the grade "very good" in taste, and a positive description of its aromatic, distinct vanilla note, sweetness, and creamy, melting consistency, the presence of these questionable ingredients led to its poor performance in the test.
It's worth noting that unlike Cremissimo, many cult brands have long disappeared from the shelves. Four other tested ice cream varieties contained only traces of MOSH, which were not downgraded by Oeko-Test.
Another product that performed poorly in the test was the Mövenpick Urban Moments Cherry Brownie, which Oeko-Test criticized for three pesticides and carrageenan in the samples.
Oeko-Test recommends avoiding the use of carrageenan due to potential health risks. The test results for all twelve vegan ice cream varieties, including Cremissimo, can be found on the Oeko-Test website (paid link provided).
While carrageenan is presumably not absorbed by the body, it is suspected of promoting allergies. In animal studies, MOSH/MOSH-analogues have been linked to organ damage. As the long-term health effects of these substances in humans are still unclear, it's advisable to exercise caution when consuming products containing them.
- The presence of carrageenan, a questionable thickening agent, in Cremissimo ice cream, despite receiving a positive taste rating, has raised concerns about health-and-wellness and lifestyle choices, as Oeko-Test recommends avoiding it due to potential health risks.
- In the realm of food-and-drink, particularly vegan ice cream, it's important to consider the nutritional value and ingredients used, as evidenced by the poor performance of Cremissimo ice cream in the Oeko-Test, with concerning levels of MOSH/MOSH-analogues and carrageenan.
- Fitness-and-exercise enthusiasts seeking a balanced and healthy lifestyle should be vigilant about the ingredients in their food-and-drink choices, such as the questionable substances found in Cremissimo and Mövenpick ice cream varieties, which could potentially impact health-and-wellness in the long run.
