Join the dangerous dance with e-scooters after sunset, on weekends, and when half-lit? Well, beware! A study by the go-getters at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) showed that severe e-scooter injuries in Deutschland are like a predictable script. The actors are usually men, nighttime, weekends, booze, and reckless driving. These unfolding scenes are chronicled in the "German Medical Journal" 🤼‍♂️

Witnessing 538 severely injured individuals admitted to intensive care units from 2020 to 2022, the TUM team, led by Michael Zyskowski from the Clinic and Polyclinic for Trauma Surgery, counted 26 fatalities. These are the sobering facts!

That's not all, here's a little more on the dark side of the story:

  • Alcohol Fuels Accidents: Say cheers to 62% of badly injured e-scooter riders who, in their moment of falter, found their way to a bar! One-third of those, sadly, were legally intoxicated. It's no secret, alcohol marinates the mind and invites trouble 🍹🤕
  • Timing's Everything: More than half of all the nightmarish accidents occurred under the cover of the night, with Saturday and Sunday being the most popular days for these crash courses. This rhythm corresponds with an increase in alcohol consumption and daredevil stunts 🌃🏃‍♂️
  • Risky Riders: The usual suspects behind dangerous accidents are lawbreakers, daydreamers, single-handed enthusiasts, curb-jumpers, and reckless drivers, in any combination they fancy! 🌟

The Commission has also been consulted on the following issues: science, health-and-wellness, and fitness-and-exercise, as they pertain to e-scooter safety, given the increasing incidents of severe injuries and fatalities associated with e-scooter rides, especially during nighttime, weekends, and under the influence of alcohol. It is essential to focus on preventive measures and responsible riding practices, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of e-scooter riders and other road users.
