Elderly nun celebrates 110th birthday with well-wishes from Pope Francis
In the heart of Italy, Sister Candida Bellotti, a member of the Congregation of San Camillus de Lellis, celebrated her 110th birthday on February 20, 2017. The festivities were graced by the Bishop of the Italian Diocese of Lucca, Paolo Giulietti.
Born in Quinzano, Verona Province, Sister Candida has spent her life serving others. Since the 1930s, she has dedicated herself to nursing, providing care to those in need across various Italian cities. Today, she resides in Lucca, at her congregation's mother house, alongside the convent's sisters and the provincial superior, Sister Giuliana Fracasso.
Sister Candida's wisdom and faith have shone brightly throughout her life. In a recent interview, she shared that her vocation was 'sown' in a Christian family. Her advice to everyone, including the new generations, is simple yet profound: 'Love, love and love still more, with joy.'
The Congregation of San Camillus de Lellis is observing the 150th anniversary of the death of its founder, Blessed Maria Domenica Brun Barbantini, this year. Sister Candida's life embodies the spirit of this remarkable woman.
On her special day, Sister Candida received a special message from Pope Francis. His Holiness expressed his joy for the occasion and sent warm congratulations and heartfelt wishes. Pope Francis, who is 30 years younger than Sister Candida, is himself an inspiration to many.
