Emergency Services Tackle CO Pollution Incident in Oberhausen
On August 13, 2025, a collaborative effort by Oberhausen's fire department, local environmental protection agencies, and a hazardous materials disposal company successfully tackled a carbon monoxide (CO) pollution incident on Volklinger Straße. The emergency services were alerted to a medical emergency involving two heating installers in the basement of an affected building.
Upon arrival, CO warning devices indicated dangerously high CO concentrations in the basement. The installers, affected by symptoms such as headaches and dizziness, were promptly brought outside for medical treatment. The exact cause of the high CO concentration remains undetermined but could be attributed to a heating system defect or insufficient exhaust gas removal due to warm weather.
Firefighters in protective gear set up ventilation equipment and monitored the decrease in CO levels using measuring devices. The fire department and EVO Gas were called in to investigate the cause and remove the gas from the building. Carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas, is produced by incomplete combustion in defective or improperly operated heating systems or blocked exhaust gas paths.
The successful collaborative effort resulted in the elimination of CO pollution in the building. The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of carbon monoxide, which can cause severe symptoms and even death in high concentrations. Regular maintenance of heating systems and proper exhaust gas removal are crucial to prevent such incidents.
