A study published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine sheds light on this tantalizing prospect. Researchers analyzed the sexual function of 40 women aged 45 and over after 12 weeks of yoga sessions. Result? A significant improvement in their sexual function across all areas on the Female Sexual Function Index (desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction, and pain). A whopping 75% of participants reported an improvement in their sex life post-yoga training. The women were schooled on 22 poses, like trikonasana (triangle pose), bhujangasana (snake), and ardha matsyendra mudra (half spinal twist), to enhance core abdominal muscles, aid digestion, fortify the pelvic floor, and amplify mood.

Men Benefit Too

Call it a level playing field. Another study spearheaded by Dr. Vikas Dhikav, a neurologist at the Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in New Delhi, India, explored the impact of a 12-week yoga program on male sexual satisfaction. The positive outcome? After the study, participants reported a marked improvement in their sexual function as gauged by the Male Sexual Quotient. Researchers found improvements in all facets of male sexual satisfaction: desire, intercourse satisfaction, performance, confidence, partner synchronization, erection, ejaculatory control, and orgasm.

But how exactly does yoga work its magic? A literature review led by the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, offers some insight.
