Escalating Fatal Accidents in Mainz 2025: A 144% Surge - Police to Enhance Elderly Safety Measures
The Mainz Police Department has announced a series of advisory services to promote road safety, particularly for senior citizens, as part of the European RoadPOL Safety Days from September 16 to 22, 2025.
Concerns have risen following the revelation that 15 of the 22 fatalities in Mainz in 2025 were seniors. This alarming statistic has prompted the police to focus their efforts on improving the safety of older road users.
In an attempt to address this issue, the Mainz Police will provide advisory services at various locations across the city and surrounding areas. On September 17, from 2:30 to 5:30 PM, they will be present in Worms' shopping park and pedestrian zone, offering advice and guidance to the public. Similarly, on the same day, from 1:00 to 5:00 PM, they will have information tables at the senior safety day of the Verbandsgemeinden in Eisenberg, Friedrich-Ebert-Straße 13.
The Mainz Police will also be present at Ingelheim's weekly market during the day on September 17, offering an advisory service on senior safety. On September 18, between 2:00 and 4:00 PM, they will provide an advisory service on e-scooters and pedelecs in the pedestrian zone of Bad Kreuznach, with a focus on roadworthiness, traffic suitability, and illegal tuning.
In addition to these services, the Mainz Police will inspect the roadworthiness of bicycles for children and seniors at several schools in Bad Kreuznach on September 18 in the morning. They will also hold an advisory service specifically for seniors in Mainz-Bretzenheim at Dahlheimer Weg on September 19, 2025.
The Mainz Police Department's participation in the RoadPOL Safety Days 2025 will primarily involve intensified traffic controls and prevention efforts focused on the safety of older road users. However, it's important to note that there are no specific events outside Mainz explicitly attributed to the Mainz police. Other RoadPOL activities with vehicle stops are reported in the Odenwaldkreis area, but these involve local police there, not Mainz police.
In 2024, the Mainz Police recorded a total of 23,753 accidents, which was 317 fewer than in 2023. The number of accidents involving seniors aged 65 and over in Rhineland-Palatinate increased by 1.7% or 84 accidents in the previous year. This underscores the need for increased focus on senior safety.
In 2024, there were 21 traffic accidents that resulted in fatalities, a significant decrease from the 25 fatalities reported in Mainz in 2023. However, the first half of 2025 has seen a 144% increase in fatal accidents compared to the same period in 2024.
It's worth noting that among the fatalities in 2024 were four young drivers, five cyclists, five motorcyclists, one passenger, and two seniors. This highlights the need for comprehensive road safety measures that cater to all road users.
The Mainz Police's advisory services during the RoadPOL Safety Days aim to raise awareness of road safety among seniors and ensure that all road users in Mainz can travel safely and confidently. On September 16, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, they will offer prevention work on senior safety at the Alzey, Karl-Heinz-Kipp-Straße roundabout. On September 22, from 2:30 to 5:30 PM, they will offer advisory services at Worms' EWR Arena parking lot, Alzeyer Str. 131.
These advisory services offer a valuable opportunity for Mainz residents, particularly seniors, to learn about road safety best practices and ensure their safety on the roads.
