Evolving Horizon for Our Digital Ecosystem
Cosmos Magazine to Transition to Digital Platform by June 2025
In a significant move, Cosmos Magazine, under the publishing auspices of the nation's science agency, will cease print production as of June 2025. Concurrently, digital subscriptions will also terminate during the same month. All affected subscribers will receive refunds for their remaining subscription term, with specific details provided below.
Following a comprehensive assessment of its magazine business, the editorial arm of the agency's publishers has made this challenging but strategic decision. The transition will see the integration of Cosmos digital content, along with the publication of peer-reviewed journals, e-books, and factual science news on a new digital platform.
This change is intended to enhance the dynamic news service and align with the growing shift towards online content consumption. The new platform aims to consolidate audiences for a sustainable, cutting-edge science experience.
Cosmos Online News Service will persist at the existing website until later in the year, when it will move to the publishing partner's fresh digital destination for science content. The team behind this new website will continue to produce stories about the latest scientific discoveries and interviews with experts in the field.
Subscribers are encouraged to sign up for Cosmos newsletters to stay informed about these developments.
The choice to phase out print and focus on digital resembles a broader trend of diminishing interest in print magazines and spiraling production costs. The CSIRO acquired the Cosmos brand in June 2024, responding to financial challenges faced by its former charitable owner. Despite the replacement of five roles at Cosmos, four new positions have been created to support the digital content initiative.
For subscribers who purchased their subscriptions directly from CSIRO Publishing via credit card, refunds will be credited to their accounts. Other subscribers, such as those who purchased through the Royal Institution of Australia or via agents, will be guided through the refund process per their respective standard procedures. School and library subscribers will be contacted separately to arrange refunds.

In this transition, the Cosmos Magazine will publish science news, peer-reviewed journals, and e-books digitally on a new platform, focusing on topics such as medical-conditions, health-and-wellness, environmental-science, space-and-astronomy, and more. Moreover, the new Cosmos Online News Service is expected to cover all the latest scientific discoveries and interviews, aiming for a sustainable, cutting-edge science experience.
