Expansion of the metabolic plan by HPA announced
The Metabolic Syndrome Prevention Program, run by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, has been successfully helping individuals reduce the risks of metabolic syndrome for three years. Initiated in July 2019, the program has now expanded its services to more general hospitals, starting from next month.
Most services are provided at clinics, with around 20% offered at general hospitals. This expansion is estimated to benefit an additional 20,000 people, as the program aims to reach more individuals and help them manage their health.
Doctors involved in the program provide treatment advice, help with lifestyle changes, and offer follow-up phone calls and individual medical reports. Clinics also offer monitoring and medical advice to ensure patients are on the right track.
One such clinic is the Chimei Medical Center in Tainan, led by director Chen Ping-cheng. The clinic has been recognised for its "good quality" services, with Chen stating that the recognition is a reward for helping patients improve their health through exercise, lifestyle, and dietary changes.
The Health Promotion Administration (HPA) has ranked the best clinics in the nation and each administrative region based on health education effectiveness, reduction of metabolic syndrome instances, remission rate, and other medical indices. Clinics achieving a remission rate of over 40% are considered "good quality" by the HPA.
The success of the program is evident in the stories of individuals like Chao, who had metabolic syndrome and lost 18kg in six months by following advice from clinic staff. Chao, who initially made the decision to lose weight to avoid a decline in the quality of his life due to his metabolic syndrome diagnosis, credits the clinic staff for providing him with the necessary help and guidance throughout his weight loss journey.
Chao had fatty liver and liver fibrosis before starting the weight loss program at the clinic. His weight loss resulted in improved low-density lipoprotein and cholesterol levels, and liver function indices. Chao, who used to work in an office, also started riding a bicycle to work instead of taking the MRT as part of his lifestyle changes. He now does 30 squats before eating, eats proteins first, then fibers and rice.
As of now, approximately 3,100 clinics and 5,200 doctors have participated in the program since its start in July 2019. Approximately 120,000 people participate in the program each year, with the program having helped approximately 420,000 people reduce the risks of metabolic syndrome.
The expansion of the Metabolic Syndrome Prevention Program is set to improve the health of thousands more, offering hope to those struggling with metabolic syndrome and providing them with the tools and guidance they need to improve their health.
