Experienced instant benefits after performing a desk mobility routine suggested by a physical therapist, following a series of four movements

In the realm of office work, it's common for our bodies to feel the toll of prolonged sitting. But what if there was a simple solution to alleviate the stiffness and tension that comes with it? Enter the desk mobility routine, a four-move sequence shared by Dr Adam McCluskey, a physical therapist and educator, on his Instagram account, ThePtInitiative.

Launched in May 2020, Dr McCluskey's page is dedicated to helping followers "move better and live pain-free". The routine, requiring only a chair, is no exception.

The fitness writer, who often experiences stiffness and tightness in the back, shoulders, neck, and spine, found the routine to be both relaxing and refreshing. The fourth move, in particular, sent a deep stretch through the hips and glutes, while the chair supported rotations offered a stretch in the front of the writer's shoulders.

As the writer performed the routine, they noticed differences in their body. A knot in the center of their back from the kneeling thoracic extensions, tightness in the front of their shoulders from the chair supported rotations, and a tighter left hip during the seated figure four position were identified.

After finishing the routine, the writer felt less tense and more focused. They plan to do the routine again and use its individual moves as quick breaks from desk work. Interestingly, the routine does not require a yoga mat, making it an accessible option for many.

Dr McCluskey, who runs ThePtInitiative, recommends this desk mobility routine for anyone who works at a home office desk. For those new to yoga or looking for hip stretches to combat the effects of sitting for extended periods, this routine could be a great starting point.

So, if you're looking for a way to loosen up during your workday, give the desk mobility routine a try. You might just find it makes a world of difference.
