Exploring the concept of post-mortal existence through artificial intelligence - new play 'Second Thought' delves into this fascinating theory
In the heart of Dallas, at Bryant Hall, 3400 Blackburn St., until July 26, Jenny Ledel's play, "Your Wife's Dead Body," is captivating audiences with its unique blend of technology and human emotion.
The play revolves around Jane, a woman who is terminally ill at the beginning of the show. After her death, her husband, Jackson, interacts with a replicated version of Jane, created by The Lazarus Project. This digital resurrection raises profound questions about identity, memory, and the essence of what makes a person truly alive.
The AI-generated Jane, portrayed powerfully by actor Jenny Ledel, is not a perfect replica. She exhibits signs of being 'off' and 'not quite right,' which makes her sad and desperate. This creates an awkward tension with Dan, Jackson's co-worker and friend, played by Francisco Grifaldo, who senses something amiss about her.
Three other actors, Rhonda Boutté, Danielle Pickard, and Alex Organ, provide AI voices for the play, contributing to the intricate narrative that toggles between AI's questions to original Jane and the consequences of living with replicant Jane.
The play is designed with distinct lighting and sound by Lori Honeycutt and Cresent R. Hayes, respectively, and is directed by Alex Organ in a minimalist style, with a stark black and white runway set.
"Your Wife's Dead Body" delves into the emotional and ethical complexities that arise when a loved one's digital likeness continues to interact with the living, exploring the possibilities and limitations of living on through technology. Drew Wall, playing Jackson, delivers a powerful performance, portraying his character's pain and uncertainty.
The play is part of the journalism initiative for Arts Access, funded by several organisations including the Better Together Fund, Carol & Don Glendenning, City of Dallas OAC, The University of Texas at Dallas, Communities Foundation of Texas, The Dallas Foundation, Eugene McDermott Foundation, James & Gayle Halperin Foundation, Jennifer & Peter Altabef, and The Meadows Foundation. The News and KERA retain full editorial control of Arts Access' journalism.
