Unauthorized Fireworks Factory Explosion in Suphan Buri Leaves Nine Dead and One Critically Injured

A tragic explosion at a house in Moo 1, Ban Pho Tha Sai, Muang district, Suphan Buri on July 30, 2025, has claimed the lives of ten individuals and left a 44-year-old woman in critical condition with 67.5% burns [1][3][4].

The explosion occurred during the illegal production of bird-scaring firecrackers, highlighting ongoing concerns about fireworks production safety in the area. This incident is part of a troubling pattern in Suphan Buri, which has experienced several explosions over the past decade, including a major fireworks factory explosion in January 2024 causing 23 deaths [1][2][3].

Police are gathering evidence, questioning witnesses, and trying to trace the source of the explosives brought into the community. Authorities have cordoned off the area to preserve the scene and continue rescue and investigation efforts. The Environmental Health Officers are examining the area for potential chemical contamination [1][2][3].

The Ministry's crisis response team and EOD specialists have secured the site and set up a coordination centre at Wat Pho Tha Sai. The Social Development and Human Security Minister, Varawut Silpa-archa, has expressed condolences and ordered immediate assistance for the affected families [1][3].

The bodies of the victims are undergoing forensic identification. The site did not have a licence or equipment for such a hazardous activity, indicating repeated safety and regulatory enforcement failures. Despite the Ministry of Industry announcing in January 2024 intentions to amend laws governing fireworks factories to improve safety, there appears to be continuing illegal production [1][3].

Mr Somsak, who once chaired a national committee on firework safety, has criticised the lack of enforcement of previous measures involving five key ministries. He has called for a formal inquiry into whether agencies implemented the required safeguards [1]. Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin has deployed emergency teams to the site.

Neighbors have confirmed the fireworks manufacturing operation was carried out inside the residence. The house was being used illegally as a makeshift facility for manufacturing ball fireworks. The explosion is the third firework-related incident in Ban Pho since 2006. Previous explosions in 2006 and 2015 also caused fatalities and major property damage.

This incident underscores ongoing challenges with illegal fireworks production and insufficient enforcement of safety regulations, despite previous deadly incidents and government promises to amend laws and tighten controls. The investigation aims to clarify violations and ensure stronger compliance to prevent future tragedies.
