Exposed: Russian Influence Operations Threaten Moldova's EU Integration

Moldova's political scene has been stirred by disclosures of Russian influence operations, with local journalists uncovering details of activists recruited for pro-Russian activities. The elections, deemed 'most consequential' by President Maia Sandu, hang in the balance between European integration and Russian influence.

Investigations have exposed an influence network led by exiled pro-Russian oligarch Ilan Shor. This network recruits activists to spread anti-EU messaging and participate in street protests. Funding flows from a sanctioned Russian bank, with an organization called 'Eurasia' helping to funnel money and build a larger ideological project across former Soviet countries.

The influence campaign, while denying its activities, shows cracks in its approach. Organizers argue over money, and recruits complain about payment delays. Meanwhile, Sandu's party, supporting EU integration, faces off against the opposition, backed by Russian disinformation and vote-buying schemes. Activists have been trained in protest tactics and weapon use at camps in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia, with funding from a sanctioned, state-backed Russian foundation.

Moldova's referendum on EU integration passed narrowly, with Sandu reelected after a runoff. She warns that the parliamentary election on Sunday will determine whether Moldova consolidates as a stable democracy or is destabilized by Russian influence. The exposed influence operations highlight the ongoing struggle between European integration and Russian influence in the region.
