German Red Cross Urges Blood Donations During Autumn Holidays
The German Red Cross (DRK) is appealing for blood donations during the autumn holidays in Berlin, Brandenburg, and Saxony. The organisation fears a potential scarcity due to people going on vacation.
The DRK warns that anyone feeling unwell during the flu season should refrain from donating blood to prevent infection risks to other donors and staff. Blood donations take around 45 minutes and can be made by individuals aged 18 and over. To accommodate busy schedules, the DRK offers special appointments on Saturdays during the vacation period.
First-time donors are especially encouraged to step forward. As baby boomers gradually retire due to health reasons, the DRK seeks to maintain a steady supply of blood. It's crucial to note that platelet-based blood products have a short shelf life of about four days and require constant replenishment.
The German Red Cross urges healthy individuals to donate blood during the autumn holidays. By doing so, they can help ensure a stable blood supply, particularly for platelet-based products that have a short lifespan. The DRK welcomes first-time donors and offers flexible scheduling options, including Saturday appointments.
