Healthcare organization Highmark Health appoints Alistair Erskine, MD, MBA, as its new Chief Digital Information Officer.
Dr. Alistair Erskine, a seasoned healthcare professional with over 25 years of experience, has joined Highmark Health as its first Chief Information Digital Officer (CIDO). This appointment comes as the industry-leading 'payvidor' seeks to further enhance its ability to bring critical member insights and evidence-based pathways directly to the point of care.
Dr. Erskine, who is excited to join Highmark Health, brings a wealth of clinical and informatics experience to the table. He earned his BA in biochemistry from the University of Virginia, his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia, and his MBA from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Before joining Highmark Health, Dr. Erskine served as Chief Digital Health Officer at Mass General Brigham, where he led the $1.2 billion Epic implementation. Prior to that, he was at Emory Healthcare and Emory University, where he led a 1,100-member digital team and managed a $350 million annual budget.
At Emory, Dr. Erskine introduced a number of significant initiatives. He created the world's first fully Apple-powered hospital environment as part of an 'Apple-first' hospital initiative. He also introduced a Chief Financial Informatics Officer role, resulting in $94.9 million in annual financial improvements.
Mick Malec, Highmark Health's Enterprise Technology & Operations Officer and CEO of enGen, praised Dr. Erskine's appointment. Malec expects Dr. Erskine to lead a digital transformation at Highmark Health, eliminating transactional waste and delivering world-class, value-based care.
Dr. Erskine sees his role at Highmark Health as instrumental in helping the organization position itself strongly for the future. He plans to develop and implement Allegheny Health Network's (AHN) digital roadmap and provider strategy, drive electronic health record optimization at AHN, and create seamless integration between Highmark Health's payer and provider data systems.
Mark Sevco, AHN president, expressed anticipation for Dr. Erskine's work in improving quality, making care more accessible, lowering costs, and developing a digitally savvy workforce. Dr. Erskine's appointment comes as Highmark Health looks to further leverage technology to improve healthcare delivery and outcomes.
Dr. Erskine became Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Clinical Informatics. He also completed certifications in Business Analytics and AI at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He left EmblemHealth before joining Highmark Health.
