Home fragrance manufacturer initiates recall of 850,000 diffusers due to magnetic risk posed to young children

The US-based company Pura Scents has issued a recall for approximately 851,400 Pura 4 Smart Home Fragrance Diffusers due to a safety concern. The detachable front covers of the affected units contain two larger magnets that can detach, posing a choking and ingestion hazard, particularly to children [1][3].

If swallowed, these magnets can attract each other within the digestive tract, potentially causing serious injuries such as intestinal perforations, blockages, infections, and can be life-threatening [1][3].

The affected product covers have 3 smaller and 2 larger magnets inside the removable front cover. Only the covers with these two larger magnets are subject to recall. The recalled units are identified as Version Number V4, with specific serial numbers listed by the manufacturer [1].

To ensure safety, consumers are advised to immediately dispose of the existing detachable cover and keep the diffusers out of the reach of children and pets [1][3][5]. To receive a free replacement cover, individuals can contact Pura Scents at 855-394-5292 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. MT Monday through Friday [3].

Alternatively, consumers can email Pura Scents at [email protected] or visit the company's website and click on "Recall" at the bottom of the page for more information [3].

No injuries have been reported in Canada; however, three reports of magnet detachment without injury have been received in the U.S. [1][2].

It is important to note that these diffusers were sold at Target, Scheels, and other stores nationwide, as well as online through Pura's website, Amazon, Target, and Scheels. An additional 1,100 of these diffusers were sold in Canada [2].

The diffusers were sold from August 2023 through May 2025 for about $50 [2].

In summary, consumers should not use the diffuser near children or pets if it has the recalled cover. Remove and discard the detachable cover with the larger magnets. Contact Pura for a replacement cover free of charge. Be aware of the ingestion hazard posed by detached small magnets. These steps are critical to avoid serious health risks from swallowed magnets [1][3].

Science warns of potential ingestion hazards posed by detached magnets, particularly in children and pets, due to their ability to attract each other within the digestive tract and cause serious injuries. In the context of the Pura Scents recall, it's essential to follow health-and-wellness advice and ensure the safe disposal of affected covers to avoid ingestion.
