Human Remains Found Near Burlington Church Spark Investigation
A decommissioned oil tank, buried between the East Plains United Church building and its historic cemetery, has been discovered during repairs. The find has led to an investigation involving local authorities and archaeological experts.
The oil tank, found to contain residual oil and sand, was being removed by Burlington Paving, who were contracted to repair a walkway leading to the Aldershot Child Care Centre. The church board has since commissioned the Archaeological Society of Ontario to investigate the site.
During the removal process, human remains, including a partial skull and bones, were unearthed. Jan McCormick, the minister at the church, confirmed the discovery. The police and coroner were called to the scene, but no crime was suspected. Further assessment has revealed more bones, suggesting multiple burials.
The Bereavement Authority of Ontario is now involved, conducting a Burial Site Assessment with a registered Archaeological Research Company. The oil tank will be completely removed, and soil testing will commence to check for any contamination. If contamination is found, further excavation may be necessary.
The discovery of human remains at the East Plains United Church in Burlington has sparked an investigation into the site's history and potential oil contamination. The church and local authorities are working together to ensure the remains are handled respectfully and the site is made safe.
