In the crossover study, participants' biomarkers were assessed after sleep restriction and during healthy sleep periods. The findings show that poor sleep for just three nights led to an increase in biomarkers associated with inflammation and heart health.

Although exercise can help mitigate some effects, it failed to erase the impact of sleep restriction entirely. The study's authors emphasize the need for further research to assess the impact of periodic sleep deprivation on various demographics, including older adults and women.
