Auroville Hosts Dance Movement Therapy Workshop by Choreographer Tripura Kashyap

On April 15, 2025, Auroville played host to a unique workshop led by renowned choreographer and movement therapist, Tripura Kashyap. The workshop, which focused on Dance Movement Therapy (DMT), aimed to aid personal growth and development, rather than mastering dance techniques.

During the session, Ms. Kashyap guided the students to understand the importance of being aware of their bodies and selves. The exercise, designed to increase focus and bring about a sense of calmness and relaxation, encouraged the students to use dance as a medium for personal growth and development.

Ms. Kashyap's approach to DMT incorporates elements from Tai Chi, a Chinese martial art form. She encouraged the students to "paint their energy and breath with tai chi movements and play with this creative energy". The exercise was also expected to aid motor functions and enhance the students' physical, emotional, mental, and cognitive well-being.

The central focus of the workshop was on the establishment of a relationship between motion and emotion. Ms. Kashyap emphasized the importance of using dance as a medium for self-discovery and self-expression. She also highlighted the importance of internal and external balance through dance, encouraging the students to monitor their breathing during the exercise.

The students experienced the flexibility of their bodies during the exercise, as they explored the creativity behind movements. The ultimate goal was not to understand body movements for designing garments, but to gain a deeper understanding of themselves and their potential for growth.

This workshop marks a significant step for our institution, as we continue to explore innovative methods for holistic development. We look forward to more such enriching experiences in the future.
