Investigation Ongoing After Multiple Deaths Linked to Cough Syrup in MP's Chhindwara

A probe is underway to determine the cause of multiple deaths linked to cough syrup consumption in Madhya Pradesh's Chhindwara. Authorities are exploring various possibilities, including water contamination, insect-borne diseases, and respiratory infections. One case has tested positive for Leptospirosis.

Investigations have ruled out certain contaminants. Drug control officials found no traces of Diethylene Glycol (DEG) or Ethylene Glycol (EG) in the cough syrup samples. Both the Madhya Pradesh State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) and the National Institute of Virology (NIV) Pune confirmed these findings. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has issued an advisory, stressing the rational use of cough syrups among children.

The product under scrutiny is a dextromethorphan-based formulation, not recommended for pediatric use. Following several child fatalities, officials from Delhi and Chennai are investigating the pharmaceutical factory 'Mayawati Pharma'.

The cause of the deaths remains under investigation, with Leptospirosis being one possibility. Contaminants like DEG and EG have been ruled out. Authorities continue to examine all angles, including the product's suitability for its intended use.
