Kazakhstan Marks 175th Birthday of Jambyl Jabayev, Master of Oral Poetry
Today marks the 175th anniversary of the birth of Jambyl Jabayev, a master of Kazakh oral poetry. Known as an akyn, or traditional bard, his works have left a lasting impact on Kazakh culture. To celebrate this significant milestone, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has established a state commission.
Jambyl Jabayev was born on February 28, 1846, into a respected nomadic family. He learned the art of improvisation from the akyn Suiunbai and went on to win multiple competitions among prominent akyns. His songs, which often praised loyalty to the Motherland, honesty, and justice, helped residents of the besieged city of Leningrad endure the difficult time during the Great Patriotic War. After the October Revolution of 1917, his work became even more influential, and he eventually became the most respected akyn in Kazakhstan and a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Kazakh SSR.
To commemorate the 175th anniversary, over 500 social, cultural, educational, scientific, and literary projects will be implemented throughout Kazakhstan. These include a documentary film, new poetry collections, aitys and literary competitions, book and art exhibitions, and commemorative coins and stamps. The first meeting of the state commission was held on February 27, officially launching the celebrations.
The anniversary of Jambyl Jabayev's birth is not just a celebration of his life and work, but also a recognition of the enduring impact of Kazakh oral poetry. The extensive preparations and events planned for the anniversary demonstrate the deep respect and admiration that the Kazakh people have for this cultural icon. As the celebrations continue, his legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations of poets and artists.
