Kuwait reiterates its dedication towards safeguarding the rights of individuals with disabilities during a pivotal committee gathering.

Kuwait is making significant strides in promoting the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities, in line with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). The country's latest effort in this direction was evident at the second meeting of the national committee implementing the CRPD, chaired by Minister Dr. Amthal Al-Huwailah.

The meeting, which took place on a Wednesday, focused on discussing key issues related to advancing disability rights in Kuwait. One of the main topics presented was early intervention for developmental disabilities. A visual presentation was made to emphasize the importance of early intervention in supporting children with developmental disabilities, aiming to improve their quality of life and ensure full societal inclusion.

In response to the topic, proposals were put forward to establish specialized nurseries tailored to the needs of persons with disabilities. These nurseries would provide early developmental support, helping to set a strong foundation for these children as they grow.

The committee also discussed recent developments related to advancing disability rights in Kuwait. In this context, they pledged to continue strengthening national policies and services aimed at ensuring the highest standards of care and inclusion for persons with disabilities.

Moreover, the committee is exploring solutions for the near future to address the ongoing challenges in the implementation of the convention. This includes resuming the distribution of hearing aids to citizens with hearing impairments, as part of a broader effort by the Public Authority for the Disabled to provide assistive devices that empower individuals socially and psychologically and facilitate their integration into the community.

Minister Al-Huwailah, in her capacity as the Minister of Social Affairs, Family and Childhood Affairs and Chairperson of the National Committee for the Implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, reaffirmed Kuwait’s full commitment to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

This commitment is also reflected in Kuwait's efforts to strengthen cooperation with the United Nations to enhance social and humanitarian programs benefiting persons with disabilities. In August 2025, Minister Al-Huwailah met with the UN Resident Coordinator in Kuwait to discuss deepening partnerships in social development, including disability support, demonstrating Kuwait’s commitment to international cooperation on these issues.

These efforts collectively indicate significant progress in policy development, service provision, and international collaboration, aimed at fully implementing the CRPD in Kuwait’s social framework and promoting the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities from early childhood onwards.

The committee also emphasized the importance of strengthening national policies and services in science and technology, aiming to provide the highest standards of care and inclusion for persons with disabilities.
