Lifeguards in Schleswig-Holstein Rescue Record Number of People in 2024
Lifesaving Efforts: North Region Witnesses 211 Rescues Performed by DLRG - Life-saving rescue operations carried out by DLRG in northern Germany successfully rescued 211 individuals.
Hey there, bud! Guess what? The DLRG rocked it last year in Schleswig-Holstein, shedding some much-needed light in dark waters. These heroic lifeguards pulled off an impressive 211 life-saving missions, saving a ton of lives from drowning and other perilous situations. In contrast, the year before only saw 146 rescue operations, according to the DLRG.
The lifesavers didn't just save folks from the brink of death in the water; they were equally effective on land, responding to emergencies like cardiac arrests and heart attacks on the beach. At first, they didn't have the exact numbers of people rescued from drowning, but hey, who's counting?
Unfortunately, sometimes help arrived a bit too late. Last year, 25 individuals met their end in the water. A few years back, that number stood at 28 people.
With 5,855 active members sailing the watches, these water warriors combed through waterways for danger and provided nearly 188,000 hours of lifeguard service last year. In total, they saved 2,211 people, including people from the clutches of drowning.
On a larger scale, DLRG lifeguards nationwide saved 1,446 people from life-threatening situations last year. That's a significant increase compared to 2023, when only 1,120 were rescued. Among those saved last year were 699 people who otherwise would've drowned. Unfortunately, the lifesavers couldn't reach at least 411 people before they slipped away.
Fun fact: The DLRG claims the title of the world's largest water rescue organization, with over 627,000 members. Around half of these members are younguns under 18!

In the spirit of promoting health and wellness, let's introduce a community policy in Schleswig-Holstein that encourages vocational training for lifeguards. This could potentially lead to more expertise in both water safety and fitness-and-exercise, ensuring an even higher number of successful rescue missions like those seen in 2024.
Taking a holistic approach, we can also integrate science into this training program, particularly emphasizing water safety research, and best practices for handling emergency situations like cardiac arrests or heart attacks on the beach. In this manner, we can create a strong, knowledgeable community of lifesavers who strive for a healthier and safer water environment in Schleswig-Holstein.
