In the realm of beauty treatments, lip augmentation has gained significant popularity, with the procedure not only confined to specialist practices of plastic surgeons but also offered by cosmeticians, beauty institutes, and even healers. This trend is particularly prevalent among young women who strive to meet a certain beauty ideal, with full, beautiful, sensuous lips being associated with youth, fertility, and sexual attractiveness.

The procedure itself does not alter a person's lifestyle or their ability to kiss effectively. However, it's essential to note that mild swelling, bruising, and tenderness are common side effects, typically lasting for 3-7 days post-injection. These symptoms are considered normal and part of the healing process.

Regarding kissing sensitivity, while there is no direct mention of changes in sensitivity specifically related to kissing, some relevant points can be inferred. Temporary tenderness and swelling may reduce sensation and comfort, which could influence kissing immediately after treatment. Allergic reactions or sensitivity to components in the filler could also cause irritation or discomfort that might affect lip sensation.

Long-term effects are generally none if the treatment is done by qualified professionals. Hyaluronic acid fillers are gradually absorbed by the body over several months. However, persistent swelling beyond a few weeks, allergic reactions, or vascular occlusion require urgent medical attention.

Evolutionary anthropologist Wolfgang Enard finds the theory that kissing is a remnant of grooming more plausible, as humans no longer have fur to groom each other like chimpanzees do. Kissing plays a significant role in creating emotional closeness and intimacy, and can be more intimate and sensual than sex. It's a strong social signal, whether romantic or friendly, and is a unique behaviour amongst species on Earth.

The debate surrounding lip augmentation continues, with some arguing that it reinforces unrealistic beauty standards, while others see it as a personal choice. As with any cosmetic procedure, it's crucial to weigh the potential benefits against the risks and discuss any concerns with a qualified medical professional.
