Manufacturer withdraws salami products due to health concerns

In a precautionary measure to protect consumers' health, Franz Wiltmann GmbH & Co. KG has initiated a recall for the "Rein Beef Salami 70g". The affected products have specific best before dates and batch numbers, as detailed below.

  • Best Before Dates: 14 August 2025, 21 August 2025, and 25 August 2025
  • Batch Number: L2517700010

The recall is due to the presence of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) bacteria, which can cause severe abdominal cramps, diarrhea (which can be bloody), vomiting, and sometimes fever. Symptoms usually appear within 3 to 4 days after infection.

STEC infections can lead to serious complications like Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), a potentially life-threatening condition leading to kidney failure, especially in young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals.

The affected salami was sold nationwide. Consumers who have the affected product at home are advised not to consume it and can return it for a full refund, even without a receipt. The company also advises against seeking medical treatment without symptoms as a precaution.

The recalled products can be identified by checking the information on the back of the package. Other batches of the "Rein Beef Salami 70g" are not affected by the recall.

It is important to note that STEC bacteria produce toxins that damage the lining of the intestine and sometimes other organs, making STEC infections a serious food safety concern. Consumption of contaminated products like the recalled salami can expose individuals to this risk.

For more information about the recall, consumers can contact Franz Wiltmann GmbH & Co. KG directly. It is crucial that consumers prioritise their health and safety during this time.
