Mask Mandates Lifted, But One-Way Masking Crucial for COVID-19 Protection
Despite a recent surge in COVID-19 cases, with an average of 3,000 daily hospitalizations and 275 deaths, mask mandates are not returning in most school districts. However, experts emphasize the importance of one-way masking, especially in high-risk situations, to reduce exposure to the virus.
Not all masks offer the same level of protection. Respirator masks like N95, KN95, and KF94 provide around 90 percent protection against airborne particles, making them highly effective for one-way masking. These masks are recommended for teachers in high-risk situations by experts.
A good fit is crucial for one-way masking. The CDC's knot-and-tuck method can improve the fit of surgical masks, ensuring a tight seal all the way around and no gaps. Even cloth masks, which are less effective, can still reduce risk when kept handy for future use during surges. Only 2 percent of the nation's 500 largest school districts currently require masks.
While mask mandates may not be returning, the importance of one-way masking, particularly for those at high risk, remains clear. Effective respirator masks and a good fit can significantly reduce exposure to COVID-19, even as cases fluctuate.
