Incident on Gorki Street: Man Arrested in Family Dispute
This morning saw a police operation unfold on Gorki Street in Leipzig-Schönefeld-Abtnaundorf. According to an on-site spokesperson, an emergency call was received around 9:45 am, reporting a family dispute. There were indications that a firearm might have been involved.
Special forces from the Special Operations Command (SEK) and specially trained officers for critical situations, as well as the negotiation group of the LKA, were called to assist. A 46-year-old man was apprehended during the operation, with no injuries reported. Our reporter, Lucas Böhme, has shared more details about the incident.
European Gymnastics Championships Commence
Today marks the start of the gymnastics European Championships on the Leipzig exhibition grounds. This major sporting event is concurrent with the German Gymnastics Festival, set to begin on May 29. Approximately 750,000 visitors are expected in the city until June 1.
A total of 136 female and 165 male gymnasts from 37 nations are participating in the continental championships. For the first time, there will be a mixed team final as a preliminary event for the Olympic Games in 2028.
Cases of Fraud at Corona Test Centers
In a joint statement released today, the Leipzig Public Prosecutor's Office and local police revealed a case involving two men, aged 32 and 37, who allegedly operated a billing fraud with corona tests in 2022. The suspects are said to have billed corona tests amounting to over 800,000 euros at several test centers they managed, but never performed the tests.
The Leipzig Regional Court issued a search warrant, which was executed on April 30. Enforcement officers secured preliminary assets, including high-value vehicles, cash, and deposits, worth approximately 1.5 million euros. The investigation is ongoing.

Virologist to Assume Role as Drug Czar
The virologist and CDU MP Hendrik Streeck is set to become the new drug commissioner of the federal government. The 44-year-old, who serves as the director of the Institute of Virology at the University Hospital Bonn and was elected to the Bundestag in February, is scheduled to take on his new position on Wednesday.
