In a recent statement, Federal Health Minister Nina Warken has expressed optimism about the availability of medications this fall and winter, predicting a stable situation. The minister emphasised that the medication supply continues to have a high priority on both a national and European level.

To address acute supply problems with children's medications, an Anti-Shortage Law was passed by the previous government in 2023. This law relaxed price rules to make deliveries to Germany more profitable for manufacturers and made several months' worth of reserves for frequently used medicines mandatory as a safety buffer.

As a result of these measures, the situation has improved significantly, particularly with children's medications, compared to previous years.

In addition, pharmacies in Germany will have more flexibility in exchanging suitable available medications, according to Minister Warken. More flexibility for pharmacies in alternatives is also planned, though further details on this have yet to be announced.

Further EU regulations aim to strengthen the production location of medications in Europe, which could potentially further reinforce the stable medication supply.

Minister Warken also suggested that prompt measures can be taken in case of shortages. However, there is currently no information available about who enacted the anti-shortage legislation for pediatric medicines in 2023 or about the planned flexibility for pharmacies in alternatives.

In other news, the Lippe Fountain in Hamm will go into fall operation, but this fact is not related to the medication supply.

The news from Hamm does not provide new information about the current situation of medication availability in Hamm or the rest of Germany, nor does it provide new information about the sick leave rate in Hamm specifically for neck, nose, and ears.

Overall, Minister Warken's statements offer a promising outlook for the medication supply this fall and winter, with measures in place to ensure stability and address any potential shortages.
