Mike Mussallem receivers Medtech's Lifetime Achievement Award in the year 2025.
In the world of healthcare and medical technology, Mike Mussallem's name stands out as a beacon of innovation and dedication. The former chairman and CEO of Edwards Lifesciences will receive the 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award at The MedTech Conference in San Diego, Oct. 5-8.
Mussallem's career in the medical technology industry spans over four decades, with a significant portion of that time spent at Baxter International before his tenure at Edwards Lifesciences. Under his leadership, Edwards Lifesciences introduced breakthrough innovations worldwide, including transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), which has helped over one million patients worldwide.
Mussallem's leadership at Edwards Lifesciences was marked by a patient-focused innovation strategy and a culture centered on putting patients first. This approach was instrumental in the successful implementation of TAVR, a minimally invasive procedure that has revolutionised the treatment of aortic valve disease.
Mussallem's accomplishments extend beyond Edwards Lifesciences. He served on the Medtech Association's Board of Directors from 2004 to 2023 and as chairman from 2008 to 2010. In his leadership capacity at the Medtech Association, Mussallem advocated for faster patient access to FDA-authorized medtech.
The MedTech Association, in collaboration with patient groups and state medtech associations, is hosting a virtual workshop series on improving diversity in clinical trials. This initiative underscores Mussallem's commitment to ensuring that overlooked populations are not left behind in the pursuit of healthcare advancements.
One such initiative is the Mussallem CHD Alliance, a new initiative dedicated to saving and improving the lives of people born with congenital heart defects, no matter where they live.
The MedTech Association has also taken a stance on several policy matters. They have urged the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to create a timely, streamlined pathway for Medicare patients to access FDA-authorized breakthrough medical technology. The association has also asked the US District Court for the District of Massachusetts to rule that independent sales agent (ISA) arrangements do not violate the Anti-Kickback Statute (AKS).
The CMS' Rural Health Transformation Program, which gives states the opportunity to access the latest health care technologies that best suit their needs to improve health outcomes for rural Americans, has received the MedTech Association's support. The association has also expressed support for a policy that allows for a medical exception to cell phone bans during instructional hours for students with diabetes monitoring needs.
Scott Whitaker, the President and CEO of the Medtech Association, stated that Mussallem represents the best of humanity in any field. Mussallem led the establishment of the Edwards Lifesciences Foundation, which encourages employee volunteering in communities around the world.
As Mussallem prepares to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award, his legacy in the healthcare and medical technology industry remains a testament to his dedication to improving lives through innovation and a patient-first approach.
