Miley Cyrus shares emotional backstory that shaped her distinctive, gravelly vocal tone.

In a revealing interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music, Miley Cyrus disclosed that the secret behind her distinctive vocal style stems from a medical condition known as Reinke's edema. This rare disorder results in the swelling of her vocal cords due to fluid accumulation in Reinke's space, a layer beneath the vocal fold surface.

"I have a very large polyp on my vocal cord," explained Cyrus, aged 32, during the May 21st episode. She described how this condition has contributed significantly to her unique tone and texture, yet it poses a considerable challenge during live performances, making it as taxing as running a marathon with ankle weights.

Cyrus clarified that her raspy voice has been a constant feature since her youth, even during her party-filled days, which did not catalyze the condition but didn't help either. Her mother often comments that her voice sounds like it's coming through a radio.

Besides discussing Reinke's edema, Cyrus touched upon other health issues she has faced, including an ovarian cyst rupture and a knee injury sustained during a music video shoot.

Reinke's edema is characterized by symptoms such as hoarseness, a deepening voice, raspiness, vocal fatigue, and strain or tightness in the throat. This condition often causes singers, including Cyrus, to struggle with hitting high notes due to its impact on voice quality.

Treatment for Reinke's edema ranges from nonsurgical options like laser therapy and microlaryngoscopy, to voice therapy and addressing underlying causes like smoking or acid reflux. However, Cyrus has expressed hesitation towards undergoing surgery, fearful of losing her unique vocal quality.

In essence, Reinke's edema has impacted Cyrus's vocal cords, lending her voice its distinctive tone and texture while also complicating performance. Despite the challenges, Cyrus continues to captivate audiences with her captivating sound.
