"New Digital Tool Designed to Aid Teenagers in Overcoming Internet Compulsion"
The highly anticipated beta version of the "Freii" app, a digital media prevention program designed for teenagers and their parents, will be publicly available starting September 22. Developed by the Ludwig Freii initiative, this innovative program aims to help balance media use, screen time, and leisure time, without demonizing digital media.
The app is free for users and is intended for children and young people aged 11 to 15. Four young people provide daily digital accompaniment through videos, quiz questions, and challenges, with each task taking between three and four minutes to complete. This engaging approach is designed to make the program accessible and enjoyable for its target audience.
The "Freii" program was developed by experts from the Villa Schoepflin in Loerrach, a centre for addiction prevention. It has been scientifically accompanied and evaluated in a study funded by the Federal Ministry of Health.
The Schoepflin Foundation and the Beisheim Foundation are among the organisations that fund the offer. Notable supporter of the project is comedian and physician Eckart von Hirschhausen.
According to a study by the OECD, German teenagers spend an average of 48 hours weekly, or almost seven hours daily, on TikTok, computer games, and other digital applications. The "Freii" program is designed to help users and their parents understand the behaviour of digital media like TikTok or Instagram.
The developers of "Freii" plan to offer the app to schools, with a two-day training course provided for professionals to guide the program's implementation in educational institutions. The program's goal is to empower teenagers and their parents to make informed decisions about their media consumption and leisure time.
The beta version of the "Freii" app will be fully usable, but programmers can still fine-tune it if needed. The app will be introduced at a Berlin school on Wednesday. The final version is expected to be released later this year.
