Newly Designated Locations for Additional Banks Announced in Gronau for a Second Time

On July 23, 2025, a community workshop will be held at the Children and Youth Center Cross in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany, as part of the StEK Gronau project. This event is a follow-up to a previous workshop held in June 2025 and is focused on finding optimal locations for ten new seating benches in Gronau.

The municipal department for integration and social network work, Gronau Lunch Table, and the Aging Specialist of the city of Bergisch Gladbach are collaborating on the realization of the workshop. The event is open to residents of Gronau and the Hermann-Löns district, and participants can use a large aerial photograph of Gronau to suggest desired locations for the new seating areas.

The workshop aims to contribute to the planning process for the new seating benches in Gronau and is a starting point for the development of the district according to StEK Gronau. The StEK Gronau project, developed under the leadership of the Urban Planning Department, will provide the content and spatial guidelines for the future development of the district.

Community-led initiatives for bench placement are essential in urban areas, and the workshop in Gronau follows best practices in this regard. These practices include community engagement, strategic placement, integration with public art and amenities, and sustainability. By involving local residents and stakeholders in the planning process, ensuring that benches are placed in high foot traffic areas, and integrating them with public art and community spaces, cities can enhance public spaces and foster community cohesion.

New York City's "CityBench" program is a model for community-led initiatives. It involves public participation in suggesting locations for new benches, prioritizing areas like transit hubs and community centers. This approach could be adapted to other cities like Gronau and Bergisch Gladbach by engaging local communities and incorporating benches into overall urban design strategies.

The workshop will take place from 1:15 PM to approximately 2:45 PM. Thomas Muth and Kerstin Klann are contact points for the workshop, with their respective phone numbers provided. The event is open to seniors, elderly people, and individuals with mobility restrictions. Subscription to the StEK Gronau newsletter is possible with a short email. Documentation, further information, and interim reports for StEK Gronau can be found on the StEK Gronau website. The approved measures of StEK Gronau are planned to be implemented with public funding.

At this community workshop on July 23, 2025, participants will discuss the integration of health-and-wellness elements into the planning of new seating benches, focusing particularly on the aging population's needs in Gronau and the Hermann-Löns district. This collaboration between the municipal department for integration, Gronau Lunch Table, and the Aging Specialist of Bergisch Gladbach aims to merge science and health-and-wellness with urban development, ensuring that the district is not only aesthetically pleasing but also beneficial for the well-being of its residents, especially the elderly.
