NHS Surgeon Removed for Antisemitic Posts as Health Secretary Plans Reform
NHS surgeon Manoj Sen has been removed from the medical register for posting antisemitic comments on social media. Meanwhile, Health Secretary Wes Streeting has revealed plans to reform medical regulators following concerns about their handling of antisemitism cases.
Dr. Sen's removal comes after the General Medical Council (GMC) and Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) faced criticism for inconsistent action against antisemitism among doctors. Since October 7, 2023, 454 complaints have been lodged with the GMC, with 84% closed at the initial triage stage.
In contrast, Dr. Kamran Ahmed received only a formal warning for similar offenses. Dr. Rahmeh Aladwan, too, was investigated but faced no suspension. Wes Streeting, the Health Secretary, has slammed the current system for failing to protect Jewish patients and NHS staff from antisemitism. He plans to overhaul medical regulators to address these issues.
The GMC has acknowledged the seriousness of antisemitism, stating that it has no place in healthcare. However, the varying outcomes in recent cases have raised concerns about the effectiveness of current processes. Streeting's proposed reforms aim to ensure consistent and robust action against antisemitism within the medical profession.
