Pforzheim Launches Tree Giveaway Program for Climate Change Adaptation
In a bid to enhance urban greenery and combat the effects of climate change, the city of Pforzheim is initiating a three-year tree giveaway program. Over the course of the next three years, 1000 climate-friendly trees will be distributed to property owners within the city.
Environmental Mayor Tobias Volle highlights the synergy between individual and communal benefits, stating, "This initiative offers a fantastic chance to augment your private garden and contribute positively to Pforzheim's climate. Each newly planted tree helps reduce urban heat islands and boost biodiversity."
During 2024, the program distributed over 200 trees, and this year, 380 climate-suitable trees are available. Participants from the previous year and all Pforzheim residents are welcomed to request a tree. The Environmental Protection Office coordinates the action, with support from the Green Space and Infrastructure Office and Technical Services.
Sylvia Lorenz from the Environmental Protection Office expresses optimism, "We hope this year will see more participation than last, as residents contribute to the improvement of their local microclimate. A tree's leaves provide significant cooling through shade and evaporation." She added that this action furthers biodiversity, as the trees offer food and shelter for various animal species.
This action forms part of the city's climate change adaptation concept, adopted in 2022. The list of available trees comprises 18 deciduous and fruit species, such as field maple, chestnut, Brettacher apple, Stuttgarter Geißhirtle pear, medlar, and native wild pear.
Participating property owners can order one tree per household, either through associations, groups, or rental associations with their own plot in Pforzheim. Participants receive a bare-root tree, planting stake, coconut rope, and instruction manual. A limited number of trees per species are available.
