"Pinel requests additional assessment duration for the mother associated with the girl from LaSalle"
Ontario Child Abandonment Case: Accused's Psychiatric Evaluation Extended
The psychiatric evaluation of the accused mother in an Ontario child abandonment case has been extended, with the next court appearance scheduled for September 8.
Last June, the woman left her three-year-old daughter on the outskirts of a field in Ontario. Three days later, the girl was found, and the incident was reported. The accused, a 34-year-old woman from LaSalle, is facing charges of child abandonment and criminal negligence causing bodily harm.
Judge Bertrand St-Arnaud ordered a psychiatric evaluation for the woman at the Philippe-Pinel Institute last month. The purpose of this evaluation is to determine whether the accused can be found criminally responsible for the charges she faces. The evaluation requires thorough interviews and expert analysis, which is why additional time was needed beyond the original period.
The extension reflects the complexity and seriousness of the case and ensures a comprehensive understanding of the accused’s mental state before legal proceedings advance. The evaluation requested more time to be completed at a hearing at the Salaberry-de-Valleyfield courthouse on Friday morning.
The accused will remain in custody until then, as the Crown opposed her release. The name of the accused is under a publication ban to protect the identity of the child.
