Pioneer behind the Abortion Pill passes away.

Renowned Scientist Étienne-Émile Baulieu, Inventor of Abortion Pill RU-486, Passes Away at 98

French physician and endocrinologist Étienne-Émile Baulieu has passed away in Paris at the age of 98. Baulieu was famed for his work on steroid hormones, particularly his groundbreaking invention of the abortion pill RU-486 in the early 1980s.

The scientist, who had a long and illustrious career in the medical field, gained international acclaim for his contributions to reproductive health. Born in Strasbourg, France, in 1926, Baulieu adopted the name Émile Baulieu upon joining the French Resistance against the Nazi occupation at the age of 15.

Throughout his life, Baulieu worked extensively at the Institut national de la santé et de la recherche médicale (INSERM), where he founded Research Unit 33, dedicated to the study of hormones. He served as head of the unit from 1963 until 1997 and continued working there until his death.

Baulieu's most notable achievement was the development of RU-486, an abortion pill that revolutionized early pregnancy termination by providing a safe, non-surgical option for millions of women worldwide. His work faced opposition from anti-abortion groups, but he remained resolute in his advocacy for women's rights.

In addition to his work on RU-486, Baulieu made significant strides in the field of endocrinology and hormone research. He also developed a treatment for depression and was involved in research on neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's.

Baulieu was a champion of scientific progress and a tireless advocate for human rights. He was married twice and leaves behind three children, eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
